Plein air sketch for today

Many of the painters that I am drawn to advise that nature should be your teacher in observations of light ,colour and design not to mention it is a pleasure to paint outside after this long winter and hear the Tundra swans overhead as they arrive. This is a quick sketch of the patterns of the receding snow around one of the trees in my yard today.

Three stages of a charcoal drawing

I thought it might be of interest to show these stages of my drawing of these sheep. From here it may be developed into an oil painting as well. Doing a drawing like this is ,for me,observing ,drawing and as you go adjusting and correcting as all of the elements relate to one another and the whole. Sometimes I like the constructive part of the process that is seen in the first two pictures even better than the finished drawing because of the thrill of trying to understand the subject as a dimensional object in space with it's perspective and volume expressed only in line. If I can get this looking right the finished sheep with all of it's wool should look right.
If you are interested in having a go at this and would like to take some classes with me in my studio please contact me anytime.

New Painting"Work Horses" 18x24 inches Original oil

I love this country road just outside of Aylmer and I often stop and visit with these calm and curious guys. I also love the wildness of the roadside here where it is allowed to blossom into this rich and diverse life including the inspiring purple aster and goldenrod . This painting is about colour.
Contact me if you are interested in this painting.

New oil painting. 8x10 in. sketch of the view from the bridge in Pt. Burwell looking down at the marina.

This was an area that I had been waiting for the right conditions to paint and on a recent very cold  January day I caught the morning sun casting these shadows on the boat but it was the red building that became the focal point. Now I am waiting for the spring to paint this again with the open water.

Art Lessons

I am  offering art lessons in my studio. If you are someone who has always wanted to learn to draw and paint , would like help in your current work or are a student putting a portfolio together I offer small groups of three or one on one lessons in the fundamentals and practice of drawing in charcoal and oil painting.
We work in my studio and I draw on over 30 years of working as a professional artist to help you realize your desire to create art. My teaching style is supportive and enthusiastic, I look for your strengths and offer what I have learned to help you keep moving forward. It is truly exhilarating  and rewarding to see success in capturing your vision of the world in charcoal or paint and join the rich tradition of artists and their fascinating methods.
Pictured above at the top I am working one on one with a student painting a copy of Monet's Poppies. Copying masterworks allows us to learn about the colour choices, brushwork, composition and much more in this time honoured method of learning. This is a high school student looking to improve his portfolio.
Pictured in the centre are students painting landscapes from my samples or their own pictures. They learn the elements of landscape painting like perspective, values and edges.
From start to finish what it takes to create a successful landscape.
Bottom a student is working in charcoal. Drawing is essential to realistic painting and need not be intimidating. We study methods of drawing accurately and constructing form with light. Anyone can learn to draw and paint all you need is the desire and enthusiasm.
